Mijas is split into two areas, Mijas Pueblo which is situated on the mountain side of the Sierra de Mijas mountain range, and Mijas Costa which is situated in the heart of the Costa Del Sol and is situated between Fuengirola and Marbella.
Mijas Pueblo is about a 25 minute drive from Malaga airport, and the nearest main town is Fuengirola which is approximately 8 km away. Mijas Pueblo is a typical Andalusian style village with it’s whitewashed houses, and narrow cobbled streets, with spectacular views of the coast and surrounding wooded mountains. The village has still managed to retain some of it’s quaint traditions, one of the most unusual being the Donkey-Taxis which line the central plaza. Like most villages in Andalusia, Mijas has it’s own bullring, the Plaza De Torros, situated in the la Muralla area the bullring stands on a small square, within walking distance of the gardens, and the centre of town. The bullring was built in 1900, and is one of the most interesting sights in Mijas and is now used for bullfights and horse displays as entertainment puposes only. Although Mijas has a small population of just over 7,500, the town lays claim to a burgeoning Arts and Crafts culture scene, complete with local crafts as well as contributions from the large international community that has come to call Mijas home.
Mijas Costa is about a 20 minute drive from Malaga airport. The area of Mijas Costa covers an impressive 148 sq km, and has 12 km of coastline. For those who have already visited Mijas Pueblo will hardly believe that this town still belongs to the same part. Mijas costa is more designed for the holiday maker, with it’s golden beaches and numerous water sport facilities on offer. The beaches in Mijas Costa can be a lot quieter than that of neighbouring Fuengirola , although there still is a wide range of beach bars and restaurants that can be found directly on the beach.
For a more energetic day out why not try the Aqua Park that can be found right beside the coast road between Fuengirola and Mijas. For shopaholics a new shopping complex opened recently in Mijas Costa , called Myramar Parque, and is a shoppers paradise with a huge variety of clothes shop, including some of the well known stores found in the UK.
