Moving abroad: Life in Spain
What more could you wish for than Sun, Sea, Sangria beautiful Marinas, beaches and the Spanish hospitality to so many foreigners is more than tolerant.
The Spanish are very family orientated so nearly everywhere you go will be child friendly, yes even the bars and restaurants.
You will be the envy of all your friends and family when you make the move, which will leave you excited and full of hope for your future in sunnier climates.
But be sure of a culture shock, we Brits are not used to our shops, banks or business's closing down for 4 hours in the middle of the day for SIESTA. We are also not accustomed to the Spanish "Manana" way of life (everything is tomorrow). We have also been known to moan about the weather being too hot... YES, TOO HOT!
Many times you will find yourselves being frustrated by the fact that things take longer to get done, you may not be able to get things you want or were used to in the U.K from your local supermarket.
You may find you become lonely as you miss your friends and family from home. You will experience difficulties communicating with the local people, as they speak a different language. I can assure you everyone that makes the move to Spain goes through the same feelings initially, but with time and a better understanding of the culture you will fit in just fine.
Our Advice is:
Before moving to Spain get some knowledge of the language, take lessons if possible the more you know the easier you will feel you fit in.
Do plenty of research on the Spanish culture.
Don't be tempted to only frequent English run establishments, make Spanish friends too.
Be sure to go back to the U.K if only for short trips, just to remind yourself why you left.
Invite friends and family out to stay with you, but don't allow all and sundry to stay in your home or you may become tired and irritated by people taking the cheap holiday option.
So good luck and we are sure you are going to love your new life.
